Payne keeps her herd of young Red Angus cattle moving, ensuring that carbon is turned back into the soil and the land has a chance to regenerate.
Cattle eagerly rub themselves with a “cattle oiler” that Payne fills with a mixture of oils — including organic soy, eucalyptus, clove and lemongrass. The blend helps to keep flies at bay, but as Payne explains, many conventional farmers will just use diesel oil.
Hoofprints naturally capture moisture and create an ecosystem shielded from sun and wind, “the perfect environment for a seed to germinate,” Payne explains.
