ANDARA Gallery Presents: TARA WILKINSON I WAITING - Photography Exhibition
"The Bouncer", (Havana, Cuba, 2014) copyright Tara Wilkinson, ANDARA Gallery, Prince Edward County, Ontario.

ANDARA Gallery in Prince Edward County is pleased to present “WAITING”, a solo photography exhibition and book launch of new works by Canadian fine art photographer, Tara Wilkinson. The exhibition will open virtually on June 1st at andaragallery.com and will be open for in-person gallery visits (at 54 Wilson Road, Bloomfield) once Ontario Covid-19 public health travel restrictions are lifted. The show will run through September 5th, 2021.

Unable to travel and frustrated by the pandemic lockdowns this past winter, Wilkinson decided to travel back through her photo archives to fulfill her wanderlust. Delving into three decades of images from journeys to over 25 countries, Wilkinson was drawn to street images of daily life taken during several trips to the villages and cities along Cuba’s north coast between 2014 and 2018. A common thread she found among the images: everyone was waiting. Waiting in line for food or medicine, waiting for transportation, waiting for someone to come home.

Wilkinson quickly drew a correlation between the everyday experience of Cuban citizens pre-Covid, and the universal experience we were all now sharing during the global pandemic. “We are all waiting,” says Wilkinson. “Waiting for the fear to subside. Waiting for a vaccine. Waiting to hug family and friends again. Waiting for the pandemic to end. We are all waiting for something”, she added.

In curating the exhibition, Wilkinson was careful to strike a balance between individuals and crowds, children and seniors, friends and strangers … all waiting in different environments - an important part of the storytelling. The black and white images are raw and reveal a remarkable amount of truth.

While there is obvious hardship in many of the images, one will also find hope … the artificial flowers on a woman’s sandals, friends deep in conversation, a little boy at play, the stroke of a parent’s loving touch on a child’s head, a plastic bag dancing in the wind at an intersection.

In addition to the photography exhibition, Wilkinson will be launching her photography book WAITING, which includes additional photographs and stories about the featured images. The book is available for purchase through ANDARA Gallery.  She’’’ also be adding an immersive experience to the exhibition … an audio tour that guides you through each of the exhibition’s images sharing behind the scenes commentary and hidden details. The audio files will be accessible on the andaragallery.com website and in the Gallery using your phone to scan the QR code beside each image.

Tara Wilkinson has been photographing and exhibiting her work for over thirty years. She has won numerous photography awards, and her work has been shown as part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto. Wilkinson’s photographs are held in private collections in several countries, and are available exclusively through ANDARA Gallery at 54 Wilson Road in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada.
