The Artery Community Roasters hires people with disabilities to roast and package freshly roasted speciality coffee, sourced directly from coffee farmers. All the coffees are fully traceable, meaning that instead of just listing a country as the ‘single origin’, the Artery can tell you the variety of coffee, how it was processed, the farmer who grew it and on what plot of land, and the price paid directly to the farmer. These things matter when it comes to great tasting, ethical coffee.
All of their employees are people with disabilities. The main mission at The Artery Community Roasters is to provide stable employment and work experience, paid at a living wage, for people living with disabilities. Wages start at $22 an hour, and increase steadily, and we promote from within.
In most provinces, people with disabilities earn between 70 and 75 percent of the income earned by people without disabilities. Many also face significant barriers to finding meaningful employment at all. The Artery wants to play a small part in helping to change that.
They also want to show other businesses that not only is hiring people with disabilities the right thing to do, but it's also good for business! Consumers want to support companies that give back, and not the ones that just take.
Oh, did we mention, they also produce some of the best specialty coffee around? Freshly roasted in small batches on innovative fluid bed roasters, they sell direct trade coffee that they source through their friends at Semilla Coffee, who are coffee advocates and small-scale importers who care. This allows them to source from the same farmers every year, pay them far above market price, and build genuine relationships with them.
