The Original Herb & Spice Shop is one of the community’s most passionate supporters of local food. They work with more than 80 local farmers, producers and small-batch makers to bring fresh produce, baked goods, cheese and dairy to their shelves every week.

History
In 1973 two long-haired hippies, Mike Steinberg and Jeff Sugarman, opened a bulk natural food store on Somerset — the first of its kind for Ottawa. Now celebrating its 45th year of business in its familiar location in the heart of Wellington West and run by Steinberg and his family, Herb & Spice has developed into the go-to spot for all things local.

During the growing season, you’ll find one of the biggest selections of locally grown fruit and vegetables outside of the farmers’ market with more than three-quarters of the business dedicated to fresh food. Often you will find their dedicated staff visiting local farms and markets to see what’s growing and source new products from Ottawa’s vibrant small-batch maker scene.
